Because the book lives in Appalachian hollows and open ridgelines, the music stays rooted in old-time fiddle, mountain dulcimer, and sparse Depression-era folk — close and handmade. It warms gently in the middle sections, where sisterhood builds, then grows quieter and more searching as the terrain gets harder. Nothing here shouts.
