The music stays close and interior — cool jazz and sparse piano that mirror Charlie's lucid, lonely consciousness. It brightens fractionally in his brief peak, then grows more ruminative and modal as the regression closes in. Nothing reaches a climax; the sadness is in the sustain, not the crescendo.
